How impact is assessed under the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (“REF”)

4 September 2013

The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (“REF”) sets out how the research of British Higher Education Institutions will be assessed to enable the allocation of research grants between Higher Education Institutions (“HEI”) by the higher education funding bodies. For the first time impact will be one of the criteria evaluated in order that “benefit to the wider economy and society” is taken into account.

This document has been created to provide an overview of how research is assessed under the REF for those involved in research in international development. It also identifies members of the research assessment panels with international development experience.
